Marina Social opened last autumn in Dubai to much fanfare, is it still worth a visit
Lot’s of Dubai restaurants open with Celebrity chefs at the outset to much praise and fanfare but how often are they there and does the shine stay on?
Plus A proper, new Gastro Pub on the Walk in JBR.
Find out all you need to know on Food News which is my slot on Tuesday with Mark Lloyd, Stef Burgon and Zahra Soar on Dubai Eye 103.8.
Celebrity chef Jason Atherton has 14 restaurants around the world. He has committed to come to the Dubai branch 4 times a year, next time being from 27th to 30th of April 2016.
Tristan Farmer is the head chef on the scene here in Dubai. I will be chatting to Tristan in a couple of weeks.
You can choose to order a la carte or select from one of their 3 set menus: Munchies AED 450, Hungry AED 550 or Famished AED 650.
We chose a la carte and were hungry but came out very full! We were entertaining clients that evening, one of whom was vegetarian so it was very helpful to have a separate vegetarian menu.
Not sure if this the case in the London branches. Will report back after the summer break.
I’d recommend this restaurant as a great special occasion restaurant. It is only open for dinner during the week but they are launching a new brunch on Friday and Saturday. They have amazing views of the Marina, we went at night, so looking forward to see what’s it like in the day.
Try dishes like the Burratta that comes stuffed in a big Beef tomato and the snow peas salad (gorgeous crunchy snow peas). I really liked the gnocchi, very soft, melt in the mouth, not squidgy or doughy at all.
A full description of what we had in the post on Marina Social.
Stay SUBSCRIBED as they’re giving us a PRIZE OF A BRUNCH FOR 2 in April.
The Collective is the new Market Place in the basement of the Grand Hyatt Dubai
It now consists of a very modern eating emporium that’s made up of 3 distinct kinds of cuisines. The Indian section focuses on Parsi food so you can expect dishes like Sali Boti chicken and Lamb Dhansak. Move on (or start with) technicolor salads made fresh in front of you from the Levant region.
Try the special fatoush or the Mountain tomato salad. Eat a little bit of the Turkish chestnut honey sesame bagel with kashkaval cheese, and if you have room taste some of the kebabs made hot on the grill. Oh I forgot to mention you really must try the giant, grilled prawns, I thought I was at Burger Lobster when I saw these!
But do leave room for very sophisticated desserts made under the expert eye of Swiss Chef Rich Marti. I LOVED the special mango ice cream from Italy and his specially created chocolate almond bites with Valrohna chocolate and cocoa, not to be missed!
The forest berry tartlets were my favourite I think. The quality of the food here is way above what we’re used to at hotel buffet type restaurants.
Expect to see Weslodge – a new American diner at the JW Marriot Marquis.
It’s an American diner serving modern American food. But it’s actually a Canadian concept, 2 branches, Toronto and now DXB! It’s on the 68th floor in Tower B of the JW Marriott Marquis hotel.
Launch parties on Wednesday and Thursday evening, open to the public from Friday 1st of April. Famous for it’s yellow doors in Toronto, it’s got the same ones here and the decor and ambience is one of a Contemporary Western Saloon.
They will have a dj and sometimes some live music too. Open from 6pm but of course no outside area, not at this height!
The other “high eating place” in the hotel is Prime Steakhouse.
Don’t forget it’s Manday at Tribeca – a new concept for Men (and women!) on Mondays
A concept that’s been launched at Tribeca, on the first floor of the Jebal Ali Ocean View hotel in JBR, just opposite the Amwaj Rotana. This is a guy zone in every respect.
The deal is all guys get tokens that they can exchange for beverages at the bar. Food is available in 3 different ways, a la carte (great for any accompanying ladies!) there is also a Massive Meaty Platter, designed for 2 to share cost AED195
Or guys take part in a Hot Dog eating competition!
There are also specific pop ups just for men, like a Barber’s called Aiken. It’s expected that funky, lesser known but edgy clothing companies like Seven Clothing will also appear.
Guys, do remember, it’s a no selfie, no salads and no bubbles zone! Love the sound of this, Mark, shall we go one Monday?!
New gastropub opens at the Amwaj Rotana in JBRI think it’s been open a couple of weeks now.
It’s called JBs, situated on the ground floor of the Amwaj Rotana hotel; now open lunch and dinner. They are thinking of serving breakfast later this year. It’s the only place that’s been given official status as a Gastro Pub on The Walk in JBR!
I spoke to Jo who’s the very knowledgable South African guy in charge of operations at JBs and he gave me a flavour of what to expect if you eat there.
So they have contemporary British gastro pub type food, like fish and chips. The chips are hand cut chips with peas on the side. They also have a daily changing roast with all the trimmings, today is braised short rib beef roast with all the trimmings.
But they’re also very big on sharing boards or platters of different combinations of charcuterie, cheeses and salads. While they have a couple of set boards, you can also create your own. Starting prices from AED 95 for 2 to share the platters and AED 85 for the roast or fish and chips.
I liked the idea of a create your own mac and cheese, you can choose your cheese, then you add mushrooms etc to it. I haven’t been as yet, but I will come back and tell you what I thought of the food and any deals on. I’m keen to try this one soon.
Still no Carneval Indian gastronomy restaurant, sister of Tresind in DIFC and still no Fire and Ice, an Indian in the Movenpick in JLT.
The podcasts really elaborate on the post so do spare a moment to listen. They were live broadcast from the Internet of Things at the World Trade Centre 29th March 2016
